Based on the leadership style test, my top leadership style is transformational. I received a score of 62 out of 80. I scored a 34 for transactional and 32 for Laissez-faire leadership styles. While I have not yet held any formal leadership positions in my nursing career, I believe that the transformational leadership style describes me well. I like to view my coworkers and my charge nurse as my teammates who share the same goal as me, which is keeping our patients stay safe and providing them with exceptional care during their time of vulnerability.
According to Finkelman (2020), transformational leaders understand the vision of the organization and encourage staff to uphold the vision by providing a supportive environment. The transformational leader is also someone who understands that the environment they are in is fluid. From my own nursing experience, I understand how quickly a patient’s condition can change and that, at times, I may need to ask for assistance from my coworkers or vice versa which requires me to be flexible with my care and rearrange my priorities quickly. The plan that I may have set for myself at the beginning of my shift may change due to a patient’s condition, the doctor’s orders, or some other unforeseeable event.
