Instructions
Pick one (1) of the following topics. Then, address the corresponding questions/prompts for your selected topic:

Option 1: Exploration and Effects on Native Americans

  • Explain what motivated the European world powers to explore the Americas.

Solution:

Slavery started during the colonial era and continued even after independence. In the early colonial era, the colonies relied on labor supplied by indentured servants. There were African and British indentured servants. However, this practice had a lot of challenges. These, coupled with the conflict between Africans and the British, led to the rise of slavery. This paper explores how and why slavery emerged in colonial America. It also documents differences between slaves and indentured servants.

Slavery was developed as a solution to the growing need for labor in colonial America. Physical power was needed to maintain society through economic activities such as the processing of raw materials and working in the fields. Power drawn from animals, water, wind, and other humans was rather inadequate (Corbett et al., 2016). Colonists were less than the needed labor force. Spain responded to this crisis by introducing encomiendas. These were a set of legal rights granted to native laborers. English colonists originally relied on indentured servants. These were primarily members of the English underclass who found the promise of living in America to be attractive (Corbett et al., 2016).
